The 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup
champions, the Golden Eaglets, are set to receive land as a reward for
winning this year's tournament. When the Golden Eaglets of 2007 won the U-17 World Cup they were rewarded with plots of land by the Nigerian government, and when the class of 2013 were not given a similar reward many reacted with surprise and reproach.
Several of the young men in the 2013 squad are already the sole bread-winners in their households, and the awarding of a more permanent and substantial asset, such as land, would go a long way to ensuring that these boys could continue to provide for their families' needs.
On the failure to properly reward the players a top government official was quoted by the Guardian as saying: "The rewards could have been better and so it was very disappointing for both the players and officials."
"But it is hoped the government could still address this issue properly," the official added.
It seems someone was listening, and now the Cross River State government and Niger State have offered plots of land and houses to the victorious players and officials in Calabar and Minna.
