Lupita Nyong'oJordan Strauss/Invision Lupita Nyong’o
This much is clear about this year’s Golden Globes. Whether Lupita Nyong’o wins the award for best supporting actress at Sunday night’s ceremonies (an award for which she is the heavy favorite) or not, the young Kenyan actress will stride the red carpet beforehand as a bona fide star of the fashion world.
Red Carpet Fashio
Coverage and commentary of the red carpet.
Starting with the Los Angeles premiere of “12 Years a Slave,” in which she grabbed the paparazzi’s attention with a light-pink dress featuring a print of cockatoos from Miu Miu’s spring 2014 collection, Ms. Nyong’o has established serious fashion cred with a body-hugging Christopher Kane at the London premiere of “12 Years a Slave,” a two-toned Lanvin at the 2013 British Academy of Film and Television Arts L.A. Britannia Awards and a tiled metallic high-neck dress from Chanel’s fall 2013 couture collection at the Museum of Modern Art 2013 Film Benefit (it was called the “look of the night” by Town & Country magazine). And just this week she was unveiled in a new advertising campaign by Miu Miu, along with the up-and-coming stars Elle Fanning, Bella Heathcote and Elizabeth Olsen. (Any guess as to which designer Ms. Nyongo will wear on the red carpet tonight?)
But Ms. Nyong’o isn’t the only star who will preoccupy obsessive fashion-watchers this evening.
Among the honorees who have traditionally been red carpet standouts are Cate Blanchett, nominated for “Blue Jasmine,” whose looks in years past have included risk-taking designs by John Galliano in 1999 and Givenchy in 2011; Amy Adams, up for “American Hustle,” and whose previous star turns on the red carpet have included designs by Oscar de la Renta in 2013 and L’Wren Scott in 2011, and last year’s Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence (also nominated for “American Hustle”), who charmingly tripped her way up to the podium in Dior last year and will likely be wearing something from that design house again.
Three other people to look out for are Greta Gerwig, of “Frances Ha,” who has worn Saint Laurent and Band of Outsiders so far this awards season, Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), whose somewhat quirky taste in fashion (including a vintage-inspired Emilia Wickstead, worn to the New York Film Critics Circle Awards) might yield a departure from the all-too-safe look favored by many actresses, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Enough Said”) whose shimmering Monique Lhuillier gown, worn at the Emmys this fall, was one of that night’s most elegant looks.
And then, of course, there are those actresses who show up in a what-was-she-thinking? look. There are sure to be some of those tonight, even if the reliably head-scratching choices of January Jones will not be on display. She, like the rest of the cast of “Mad Men,” was shut out of the Globes nominations this year.
